chapter three :: dancing a waltz to the polka

...

Voldemort paced back and forth, staring into his mirror. It was the same mirror as the mirror of Erised, but after that had been created and finished, there was some left over.

It was set in the finest silver, set with emeralds the size of walnuts, and all around a gorgeous mirror. But the mirror, being magical and showing one their deepest desire, was fairly useless for showing one's true self.

As Dumbledore had said, it could drive someone insane. And Voldemort, already being insane, was driven to even further insanity, for he was envious of his reflection. What Voledmort saw was fascinating...

...he saw himself as Harry Potter.

Voldemort was jealous.

...

"WHAT?!!!!!" Draco screamed.

He'd just finished reading the letter from his father, which had so politely informed him of the fact that he was need for a human sacrifice.

Draco was no fool. He knew he had no chance to resist, but the boy could throw a temper tantrum.

"NO, NO, NO, NO!!" He yelled, whining. "NOT EVEN FAIR!" He stopped screaming now, for it was really no use. Draco let out a whimper. His life finally got interesting, he finally was enjoying himself, and wham, his father gives him up as a sacrifice for the great dark lord.

He realized his life really sucked.

While realizing this, he didn't realize that every Slytherin in the common room was staring at him, and as he slumped to the floor, he said something that Mrs. Weasley would slap him for saying.

Malfoy was handling the news fairly well, he decided, and another whimper excaped his lips. What would he do with the Ginny situation? He was barely winning her trust just now, he'd never get to do everything he dreamed of, unless she was an incredibly trusting person. And then how would he explain that, "Oh, my father's sacrificing me to You-Know-Who. We'll have to cancel that date, love."

Whimper.

Crabbe and Goyle ambled over and looked down at their crestfallen boss.

"What's wrong?" They asked, baffled.

Whimper.

Draco stood up and pushed them away. "You wouldn't understand." He mumbled, and tossed the letter into the fireplace on his way out of the common room. Where was the youngest Weasley?

...

It was getting to be late afternoon, and Ginny was studying hard in the common room. Hermione settled next to her.

"Need some help, Gin?" She asked, friendly.

Ginny nodded fervently, but slammed the books shut and turned in her chair.

"Yeah, but not with schoolwork." She explained, and Hermione nodded.

"All right then. What's your trouble?"

"I think I'm falling in love with Draco." Ginny confessed, looking at her hands.

Hermione nodded.

"I see." She said, looking away. "Malfoy, hmm? Well. Fascinating. Does he love you?" She asked.

"I... I don't know. He acts so nice. Nicer than any other boy I've ever met."

"A Malfoy acting nicer than anybody else? Well... you've got a unique situation, at least." Hermione said, smiling. Ginny rolled her eyes.

"Be serious, Hermione."

"I am serious. I don't know what you should do, except that you should do what feels good, and what effects your life in the best way. Maybe dating Malfoy won't have the greatest consequences... or he could give you the adventure of a life time. You really can't know." Hermione paused.

"The term love is blind, in my opinion, doesn't really apply to race or situation, but that you stumble into something without knowing exactly how everything will work out. You don't know if this person is the one, and you don't know if he's going to break your heart or rock your world. You've got to... well... wing it." Hermione finished, shrugging.

Ginny sneered.

"Gee, thanks." She said, sarcastically. Hermione smiled, sarcasm evident in her voice as well. "Anytime, Gin, anytime."

...

Draco was rushing through the hallways of Hogwarts like a drunkard. He was searching for Ginny, but not paying attention to his surroundings.

It was all going terribly, with his head throbbing, and his throat choked up, ready to burst into tears at anytime, when he collided with Ron, who was looking for Ginny as well.

"Watch where you're going, Malfoy!" Ron spat out, and Draco stumbled backwards, his eyes bigger and sadder looking than Ron had ever seen. Malfoy didn't get very emotional, at least, not in front of Ron. "Malfoy?" Ron asked, concern ebbing in his voice.

"What?" Draco whimpered.

Ron shook his head, and looked at Draco again. Did Draco Malfoy just whimper?

"Why are you acting so weird?" Ron asked.

Boys are so tactful at times.

Malfoy slumped to the floor, leaning against the wall. He glared at Ron. "None of your business." He said, as a tear escaped, and rolled down his cheek.

Ron didn't say anything for a moment, it was too awkward.

Then he remember why he was running.

So did Draco.

"Where's Ginny?" They both asked, assuming the other knew. They stared at each other for another long moment.

"Did you check the library?" Ron asked, and Draco nodded.

"Did you check the common room?" Draco asked, and Ron shook his head.

"No... maybe I should..." Ron trailed off, and Draco rolled his eyes.

"Well, obviously." Draco snapped. Ron glared at him.

"Watch it. I'm not totally cool with you yet, Malfoy."

"Good to know." Sarcasm dripped from venomous words.

Ron rolled his eyes and started towards the common room, but stopped when Draco called to him.

"If you tell anyone I was crying I'll make sure you're killed through slow torture."

...

Back in the Gryffindor common room, Harry and Hermione were talking intimately by the window.

"I'm worried about her, Harry." Hermione explained, ignoring him kissing her fingers messily.

Harry rolled his eyes. "She can take care of herself, 'Mione..." He said, and began to suckle her neck. Hermione shivered with pleasure, but then pushed his head back up to look at him.

"Come on, then, what do I tell her to do?" She asked, and Harry huffed.

"I don't know... you told her to do what felt good. So she will. We just have to hope that what feels good is good for her." He said, pressing his forehead against Hermione's, bumping noses with her.

Hermione sighed, and kissed him. "I know. But I don't want to see her get hurt."

"She won't." Harry said, and leaned in for another kiss, she tasted so lovely.

Ron burst into the common room, nearly tripping over the portrait hole. He stormed over to Ginny, and stopped in front of her.

Then, stuffing his hands in his pockets, he sighed.

"Malfoy's looking for you. He seems real sad. You might want to deal with that..." He murmured, and then went over to Harry and Hermione, who were watching, puzzled.

Ginny ran out of the common room.

Ron sighed and turned to his friends, who were looking at him strange.

"What was that? Did Ron Weasley just serve as a messenger for Draco and Ginny?" Hermione asked, confused.

Ron rolled his eyes. "I don't know. He seemed like he really needed her..." He trailed off.

"So the whole Ginny-Draco relationship has been approved?" Harry asked, in shock.

"No. Maybe... I don't really know. One moment he seems human enough and the next I want to break his neck." Ron explained, and Harry and Hermione smiled.

"Well, it's a start." Hermione joked, and Harry smiled and nuzzled his face in the crook of her shoulder and neck.

....

Ginny burst into the hallway outside the common room, and saw Draco standing a bit aways, hands stuffed in his pockets, looking crestfallen. Despite the sorrowfulness of it all, he also looked adorable.

"Draco?" Her voice came out small, and quiet. Draco's head snapped up and he held her gaze with watery gray eyes.

"Oh, God, Draco, what's wrong?" Ginny rushed over to him, putting her hands on his chest.

Draco whimpered.

Ginny sighed. "Oh, Draco, tell me what happened?" It must have been something horrible... Draco was whimpering.

"I don't want to talk about it." He explained, and took her hands and kissed her fingertips. Ginny trembled at his touch, but pulled her hand away.

"You're miserable, of course you want to talk about it." She argued, and Draco put his arms around her, pulling her into his embrace.

"No, I don't. I just want to be with you." He said, his voice muffled because his face was buried in her aubern waves of hair.

Ginny sighed into his chest, and they stood like that, wrapped up in each other's arms. They ignored the stares they got, and after a while, they seperated.

Draco looked at her. She blinked. "Draco..." She began, but was silenced by a searing kiss. She tried to talk, but mumbles only came out, muffled by his lips. His hands moved their way down her back, tracing the gentle curve in her figure.

They parted, and she gasped for air, stroking the side of his face. Moving her hand down his neck, she traced the line of buttons on his crisp dress shirt. Draco moved in, kissing her forehead, and tipping her head back, so he had access to her milky smooth neck.

He began to kiss it messily, biting the tender flesh, and illiciting moans of pleasure from Ginny.

"Dra... Draco..." She managed to say, and he lazily tilted his head to look her in the eye.

"We can't... not here..." She protested, when he leaned in for another kiss.

His grey eyes bored into her, and she felt like they almost burned into her soul. His eyes were a wonderful shade of grey, cloudy and dark one moment, and seemingly silver the next. Such expressive eyes that Ginny never dreamed would belong to Draco Malfoy.

"We can't?" He asked, putting on a pouty face. "Why not?" He whined.

Ginny huffed, and punched his shoulder. "Come on, don't play innocent with me..." She said, and Draco smiled wickedly.

"Who me?" He asked, opening his eyes as wide as possible. Ginny laughed and shoved him, but he grabbed her wrists and pulled her into him, wrapping his arms around her, and once again Ginny wondered why he was feeling so sad.

"Draco?" She asked, feeling quite warm and safe in his arms.

"Yes, love?" He answered, nuzzling her softly.

"Why were you so sad?" She asked, pressing the subject further.

Draco sighed.

"I received a letter from my father you know." He said, casually.

Ginny pulled away from his embrace.

"Don't change the subject, Draco." She said, firmly, and Draco merely raised an eyebrow.

"I wasn't changing the subject." He said, and gave her a meaningful look. She softened.

"Oh... what kind of letter?" She asked, worry in her voice.

"I'd rather not say. But it is the source of my troubles." He explained, and Ginny seemed satisfied, sinking into his embrace again.

"I think Ron's accepted you, you know." Ginny said, trying to fill the silence.

"No he hasn't. It's a moment of weakness. If you want anything to happen it'd better be now before he wakes up from his dreamworld. Draco Malfoy is nothing but trouble." Draco said, mockery tinging the last few words.

Ginny smiled despite herself.

"Oh shush." She said, poking him gently, making him smile.

She sighed, though, and pulled away, fidgeting. "I can't believe that yesterday I hated you and now I'm madly in love with you." She said, and leaned against the wall, looking at her fingernails, and at the chipped nail polish.

"You're madly in love with me now? Oh delightful." Draco drawled, stepping towards her again, wanting to be in close proximity with her at all times.

"I don't really know..." Ginny admitted, and she looked up at him again, their eyes locking.

"What's in that letter that's so terrible? That would make Draco Malfoy whimper? Are you in danger?" She asked, her voice nearly cracking in desperation.

Draco wished he could tell her.

"I wish I could tell you." He confessed. "But I can't." He said, somberly.

Ginny raised her eyebrows. "Does it have to do with You-Know-Who?" She asked, her voice quivering.

Draco looked at his shoes and didn't say anything.

"So that's a yes?" She asked, irritated. "Why can't you just tell me? I could help you. We could help you."

"We?" Draco asked, furrowing his brow. "As in the Dream Team? I don't think so. I can handle this myself. This is my business." He snapped, and then softened as Ginny began to tremble, her eyes watery.

"Why are you pushing me away?" She asked, choking on tears. "I'm only trying to help you! I love you, what do you expect?" She blurted out.

Draco's eyes turned downward, ashamed. "I'm sorry, Ginny, and I love you too..." He said, quietly.

"...but I can't tell you. There's nothing you can do. Everything will be fine." He lied.

Ginny nodded.

"Fine." She said, awkwardly, and Draco knew it wasn't fine. He sighed.

"Ginny..." He said, and moved towards her, placing his hands on her hips, pulling her into him, so that their lips met in a passionate kiss.

Her knees turned to water as his tongue teased her, and made her all hot and bothered, as his fingers gently stroked her back.

She gasped for air as they parted, and leaned more on Draco because her legs were weak. "Draco..." She said, but he cut her off, kissing her again.

Malfoy was a wonderful kisser, she decided.

As their lips slowly and reluctantly seperated, she tried again. "Draco." She said, pausing for more air.

"Draco... is something bad going to happen?" She asked, in worry.

Draco shook his head and leaned in to her again. "I'll never let anything happen to you Ginny. I swear."

...

In the common room, Ron was fidgeting nervously.

Hermione got annoyed. "Ron! Quit moving around! What is the matter?" She asked, irritated. Ron huffed.

"I don't know! I just feel weird, knowing that Ginny is out there with Malfoy... I mean, imagine what could happen..." He whined.

Harry smiled, as he sat with Hermione, his arm wrapped loosely about her waist. "She'll be fine, I'm sure." He assured Ron, and Hermione snuggled up to Harry happily.

Ron rolled his eyes. "Do you wanna go see what's going on?" He asked, furrowing his brow.

Harry snorted. "Ron.." He buried his nose in Hermione's hair, enjoying the faint scent of shampoo. "I doubt anything bad will happen." He said, his voice slightly muffled.

Ron seemed satisfied. That was before Colin Creevey came up to him.

"You do know that Draco Malfoy is out there ravishing your sister, right?"

....

Next day. Voldemort stared into his mirror, angrily.

A hooded figure entered the room, his face shrouded by the shadow of his robe. The figure pulled back his hood, revealing himself as Lucius Malfoy.

"My lord." He greeted Voldemort, who lowered the mirror slowly, regarding Lucius with little interest.

"My son has sent me an owl." Lucius said, running a hand through his silver hair.

"Oh?" Voldemort said, and Lucius nodded, handing the dark lord a scroll.

You-Know-Who cleared his throat, unrolled the scroll, and read it aloud.

"Father, I have received your owl informing me that I am needed for human sacrifice. Fuck you. I hope You-Know-Who uses Imperious to get you to walk off a bridge and hex yourself to the seventh hell. Fuck you.

"There's not a chance in the seventh hell (where I have previously hoped You-Know-Who will send you) that I will give up my body for You-Know-Who. The idea is fucking preposterous. Fuck you. Send my love to mother... Draco."

Voldemort smirked. "You've raised a beauty, Lucius." He said, sneering.

Lucius beamed. "Thank you, my lord."

Voldemort rolled his eyes. "I was being sarcastic, you idiot. You obviously are a rotten father. If I had a soul and therefore the ability to sympathize, I'd feel sorry for your boy."

Lucius beamed. "Thank you, my lord."

Voldemort sneered. "Anyways, send him an owl telling him I'm coming to visit. See if it scares him."

"It won't my lord. He's a stubborn bastard." Lucius said, not bothering to hide the pride in his voice.

"A stubborn bastard? A stubborn Malfoy?! A Malfoy that's a bastard?! You're pulling my leg!Really?" Voldemort asked, feigning shock.

Lucius beamed. "Oh, please, I'm blushing, my lord."

"Shut your face." Voldemort growled, clutching his mirror tightly. "You will sacrifice the boy if it's the last thing you do on your way to the seventh hell. Tell him to cut off all contact with his friends. The ritual will occur in three days." He hissed, and pointed for Lucius to leave.

Lucius bowed deeply and left.
